My name is Carlos Lopez, and I am running to be your representative for Texas House District 80. My story begins in Uvalde, Texas, where I was born and raised by an immigrant mother who crossed the border to work as a housecleaner when she was only 12 years old, and a father who broke his back doing manual labor jobs every day since his youth. Both my parents sacrificed tremendously to provide for three sons and to give us the opportunity to live a better life. Although my family lived below the poverty line, our home remained devoted to family and love. Because of my parent’s convictions and values, I was fortunate enough enjoy a protected and fulfilling childhood even though the odds were stacked against us.
My wife, Mary, and I have been married for 22 years now, and, together, have three beautiful children, who are 20, 16, and 8 years old today. They are the center of my life, my heart, and my soul. Every morning, I wake up to work hard and to provide a better future for my kids and the wonderful woman God placed on this earth, especially for me. In my life, family has always come first, so, naturally, my love for family forged my politics. Because of the strong family values that were instilled in me as a young child, I staunchly believe that no one can go wrong when they place their children, spouse, parents, and community above all.
I’m the product of Texas public schools, minimum wage jobs, and service through the United States Marine Corps. I was able to achieve my dreams of being a college-educated Latino only through the benefits of the G.I. bill and the Texas Hazelwood program for veterans. My life has taught me that nothing is possible without family or the support of your community. That is why I have always believed that when you are given something, you must always give back. Living in accordance with this philosophy, over the last few years, I have given back to my community as a youth soccer coach, a small-business owner, a teacher at our local college, and as the Democratic County Chairman for Uvalde Co. In my endless pursuit to giving back, today I am running to be your TX House Rep. for District 80.

Supporting Business
For far too long small business has been crushed by meeting the same regulatory and tax burdens required by major companies and corporations. Small business cannot operate effectively under such constraints and does not have the margins that billion-dollar companies do. I am committed to bolstering small businesses through tax incentives, access to capital, and reducing unnecessary regulations to stimulate economic growth and create job opportunities for the rural economic engine.
Health Care
Expanding Medicare is essential to ensure affordable healthcare access for all Texans. Our parents and elderly should not have stress and worry about healthcare options and affordability in their golden years. I will work towards providing quality healthcare options and addressing healthcare disparities in underserved communities.
School Safety
Children’s safety is a top priority. I will work to ensure the safety of our most precious treasures, so that no parent suffers the nightmare experienced by our friend and family here in Uvalde. Comprehensive safety measures in schools, and a common sense bi-partisan approach to protecting our babies.

I run not for fame, but for the people of my community – my home.
